Since becoming an artist full time, Jean has experimented with different media such as oils, pastels, gouache and watercolours. What will give you a true sense of a classic Jean Feeney artwork is the bold, refreshing and strong use of colour, as well as the beautifully energetic light which seems to be ever-present in her work. With a thick application of textured and almost sculptural paint, her work is influenced by the Scottish colourists and some of the German expressionists, as well as Van Gogh.

Experiencing the Beauty of Place

You can tell from looking at Jean Fenney's art that she has a deep passion for place. She says that her artwork takes its inspiration from experiencing a landscape in real life, taking in the sights and sounds, and holding on to what it is about a place that takes the breath away, whether it is in the highlands of Scotland or the Mediterranean. Then, as she paints, the explorations and the play of the process itself begins to inform the work. Jean allows the textures and colours to take on their own independent identity just as significant as the original place of inspiration.
